Former India Central Bank Governor Dr Duvvuri Subbarao Appointed Distinguished Visiting Fellow at NUS Business School

SINGAPORE --Media OutReach --29 April -- Dr Duvvuri Subbarao, former Governor of the Reserve Bank of India and former Finance Secretary to the Government of India, will be appointed as Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School with effect from 2 May 2014, for a period of one year.

A career civil servant with some 40 years' experience in India's state and federal governments, Dr Subbarao will take part in various activities at NUS Business School, the Institute of South Asian Studies (ISAS), and Monetary Authority of Singapore (MAS). He will share his wealth of insight and expertise at seminars, forums, workshops, lectures and meetings with policymakers, academia, students and the business community.

Dr Subbarao will also deliver a series of lectures on central banking, co-sponsored by the MAS. Three of the lectures will be held at NUS Business School on 30 May 2014, and one at MAS on 2 June 2014. During these sessions, Dr Subbarao will mentor academics in conducting in-depth research on central banking challenges.

On 9 May 2014, Dr Subbarao will also be a speaker at ISAS' public forum on India's general election.

Dr Subbarao served as the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India (RBI) for five years, finishing his term in September 2013. He began his term just a week before the global financial crisis erupted in September 2008, after which he led the country's effort to mitigate the impact of the crisis on the economy and to institute economic and financial sector reforms. Dr Subbarao's tenure was also marked by a calibrated monetary policy response to India's growth-inflation balance and the management of growing strains on the country's balance of payments.

Before joining the RBI, Dr Subbarao was Finance Secretary from April 2007 to August 2008, and Secretary to the Prime Minister's Economic Advisory Council from March 2005 to March 2007.

"We are deeply honoured to welcome Dr Subbarao to NUS Business School, one of Asia's leading business schools. As former Governor of RBI and Finance Secretary, Dr Subbarao led India through some of the most challenging times in the country's economic development. I am confident that our faculty members, students and community will benefit immensely from his insights and knowledge. We look forward to his lectures," said Professor Bernard Yeung, Dean and Stephen Riady Distinguished Professor, NUS Business School.

Dr Subbarao previously held various positions in the state government of Andhra Pradesh and federal government of India, acquiring hands-on experience in public finance management at national and sub-national levels. He was also involved at the policy level in economic and financial sector reforms in India.

In addition, Dr Subbarao was a Lead Economist in the World Bank (1999-2004), where his responsibilities involved analysing the public expenditures of developing countries and advising them on fiscal policy issues. Dr Subbarao was also alternate Governor for India on the Governing Boards of both the World Bank and the IMF.
