NUS Business School Marks Decade of World's Largest Student-run International MBA Case Competition

School of Business Management, NMIMS Mumbai beats 600 international teams to take Cerebration 2014 title

SINGAPORE - Media OutReach13 November 2014 - Master of Business Administration (MBA) students from the School of Business Management, NMIMS Mumbai (NMIMS), Aman Jain, Anisha Mukhija and Prince Jain, have emerged as champions of Cerebration 2014 - the world's largest student-run business case competition for MBA candidates. Organised annually by MBA students at the National University of Singapore (NUS) Business School, the competition celebrated its 10th edition this year, attracting 601 registrations in just two months (August and September 2014).

NMIMS clinched the top spot after beating participants from 150 business schools in 34 countries. Its team was awarded the grand prize of SGD10,000 at this week's Grand Final for devising the most feasible and convincing business strategy for a Singapore-based interior furnishing company whose business in India has not grown as expected, even though it has performed well in other Asian markets. The team impressed the judges with its thorough research and comprehensive proposal, which included strategies for the premium market, cross-selling, and social media engagement. The recommendations also incorporated SPRING Singapore's Business Excellence framework.

Cerebration was established in 2005 by MBA students at NUS Business School to provide their peers worldwide with the opportunity to make the leap from classroom learning to engaging with some of the world's leading organisations. Through realistic business cases, the competition bridges the industry with business-savvy MBA students looking to hone their skills. Over the years, the flagship event has gained global recognition and participation, attracting more than 5,000 teams from over 30 countries in six continents, putting Singapore on the world map of business case competitions. Each year, the best teams in the qualifying rounds are flown to Singapore to compete in the finals.

The case requirements have also evolved and kept pace with industry developments, with this year's participants having to address the transformation of the global economy and rapid digitisation of business and consumer lifestyles -- real challenges faced by sponsors Daimler Financial Services and SPRING Singapore.

"It was fantastic to take part in the finals of Cerebration 2014 in Singapore and see the excellent and innovative ideas of the other teams. Despite the pressures, challenges and disagreements we faced leading up to this stage of the competition, it has definitely been an experience that stretched our ability to work as a team, and that is something that will come in useful in the course of our careers," said Ms Anisha Mukhija from NMIMS.

The winning team was one of eight shortlisted to compete in the final leg of the competition in Singapore, making Cerebration 2014 the edition with the highest number of teams per business case flown into Singapore for the semi-finals. Two groups of four teams each were tasked to propose business strategies for their assigned case sponsor, Daimler Financial Services or SPRING Singapore.

The eight semi-finalists featured MBA students from various walks of life, including accountants, to manufacturing designers, and even non-governmental organisation (NGO) founders. The teams were from:

- Anderson School of Management, University of California Los Angeles

- Indian Institute of Management, Bangalore

- Indian School of Business

- Kenan--Flagler Business School, University of North Carolina (two teams)

- School of Business Management, NMIMS Mumbai

- Tuck School of Business, Dartmouth College

- Yale School of Management

Students from the Anderson School of Management, Kenan-Flagler Business School and Tuck School of Business joined the NMIMS team in the Grand Final.

"It has been an exciting 10 years for the Cerebration organising teams and thousands of participants, past and present. NUS Business School is proud to host the world's largest student-organised MBA case competition and be a global platform for the exchange of knowledge and ideas, in line with our vision to be Asia's leading business school. I would like to congratulate all finalists for coming this far into the competition, the winning team for an outstanding performance, and our own NUS MBA student organisers for their dedication and hard work," said Associate Professor Susanna Leong, Vice Dean of Graduate Studies, NUS Business School.

Remarked Mr Amrit Dureja, leader of the Cerebration 2014 organising team and NUS MBA student: "It has been a fulfilling journey for me and my fellow organisers. We had a lot of fun, putting the competition together from start to finish, and getting to interact with students from all over the world. It has been an opportunity we are all thankful for, and an honour to be part of the organising team for the 10th edition of Cerebration. I look forward to seeing future cohorts of NUS MBA students benefit from this enriching experience, just as we have."

'Cerebration' is a combination of the words 'cerebral' and 'celebration'.
